There are many way to eliminate credit card debt. The first is to make a conscious decision not to charge any more items to the credit card, unless it is an emergency, until the card has been paid off. The second way it to always pay off balances right away before interest can be added to the balance. Credit cards can end up costing a person much more than the item they purchased. When abused, credit cards can hurt a person's credit score, limit what they are able to do every day, and lower a person's self esteem. But it is never too late to begin paying off credit cards and getting out of debt.

If possible pay more than the minimum balance each month. This is the easiest and fastest way to eliminate credit card debt. The minimum only covers the interest and not the principal. If a person only paid the minimum each month, it could take years to pay off a couple of hundred dollars. Where possible, double the monthly payment. Results will be immediate.

When applying for a credit card, look for cards that have the lowest interest rates. Transfer balances onto cards with lower interest rates. This will lower the monthly payment and will take less time to pay off the balance. Do not cancel the old card right away. This could lower your credit score. Hang on to the old card, but do not use it.

Another option for those who have too much debt and need assistance, debt consolidation can help lower monthly payments. By putting all debt into one bill, the interest rate will be lower. This will help a person pay off their debt much sooner and help maintain a healthy credit score which may be needed to purchase a home or a car in the future.
